5. Start at the top and in the centre and gently staple out towards the edges every 3cms or so, stopping about 5cms from the corners.

6. Repeat for the botton, pulling the fabric taught, up till 5cms from corner.

7. Staple the left side firmly by do not pull tight up till 5cm from corner.

New In Store ~ Anna Maria Horner Oilcloth Fortune

It seems like months ago since i decided to stock this fabulous laminated print of Anna Maria Horners'. These subtle colours are just so beautiful, i couldnt resist adding to my store.
The 100% cotton fabric has been laminated to give it a waterproof vinyl surface. Oilcloth pvc with a cotton backing. So supple and soft, so easy to sew. I shall have a tablecloth in this one, its such a happy print.

Also a great advantage, is it is 140cm wide, making 1/4 metre 70cm x 50cm, which is ample to make a beachbag, or a beautiful apron from, without breaking the bank balance.

Also, i couldnt resist this lovely retro ticking stripe of Cath Kidstons, I only have a few metres left now, as it is so popular, this is a much heaving oilcloth pvc, with the backing beeing 100% cotton duck, making it great for totes and aprons, and bunting.

Oilcloth Bunting Party Flags ~ giveaway

Well here they are, i finally got round to photoing these. Superb for a girly birthday party or bbq.

I made them double sided from Red Plum Linen Pettite Roses Oilcloth and the Mexican Oilcloth in the tutti frutti stripe.

Each flag is moveable, on the 2 metres of pink candy floss grosgrain ribbon as a chanel has been made for the ribbon to go through, so they can be all bunched together in the middle or spaced out along the 2 metres for a larger area. They should last for years, as the oilcloth is reasonably fade resistant.

I d say they took me about an hour from start to finish, after running out of cotton, which was a silly thing to do, popping to to the local habby shop and getting sidetracked as you do, finding a cake shop and a quick cappucino. Finally getting back to finish them off, yes definitely an hour.

If I dont get too distracted tomorrow, I m going to write up some basic make-up instructions, as they are so easy to make, i have had some emails asking if i sell patterns for bunting, but i dont unfortunately, as the pattern is so easy to make its just a triangle.

Id love some feedback on these, so im giving this set of party bunting away free.

My youngest is 9 this month, and HE would not appreciate pink flags at his party, so if you can guess his birthday this month, then the flags are yours - so a 1 in 30 chance, not bad.

You'll also see them in my store soon. They will be priced at approx AUD$25.00 for a set of 5 flags with 2 metres of grossgrain ribbon.

Bye for now!!

Oilcloth Obsessed ~ tablecloths and jugs

More on Oilcloth pvc plastic tablecloths.

I was taking some pics for the store and thought how pretty these looked, so have posted them here. Im really NOT obsessed with oilcloth, i just find it fun to work with and the colours are always fabulous. Im now stocking quite a few ranges in my on line store.

The jugs look just perfect on the pink dots. These are 2 from my jug collection which i bought over from the UK when we moved here 4 years ago, most have dots on , some are glass and some enamel and others are well just jugs i love. I was having a dust around and just looking for a new home to display them, when i thought how nice theyd look on this rose and dot oilcloth from Red Plum Linen, its so shabby chic.
My only shabby room in the house now is the laundry, where i seem to spend a lot of my time. My shabby cottage I had to leave behind in Northamptonshire.

Well im off now to make some oilcloth bunting, did I say "oilcloth" ~ I did, im making some for a party in the pistashio dots. Should look great.

Have a happy sewing weekend.

Beautiful Japanese Fabric Handbags by Vnessa

I had the pleasure of being invited to a Handbag Party last week, and of course being in need of a new handbag, i went along. It was held in a stylish Hair Salon on the Currumbin beach front, here on the beautiful Gold Coast, which is just so relaxing whilst getting your hair cut.

I popped along with a friend of mine and were dazzled by the fabulous prints and beautiful designs that Vanessa had on display. Making chosing one not such an easy job. We must have looked at every bag inside and out, the inside is a lovely as the outside by the way. Large bags for the day and smaller for the evening, we were truely spoilt for choice.

After a lot of looking and touching and chatting and relooking and deciding that I am only going to buy one at the moment, the choice was harder. But I did make a decision and quickly paid before i changed my mind.

I have put just a couple here to show you, she has a gorgeous collection. Take a look at Vanessa's website for more lovely styles and fabrics.

Vanessa is a very talented lady and this shows in her gorgeous designs and choice of fabrics.

If you would like to visit her web store then please visit www.vnessa.com.au for a closer look.

I chose a bag called "Peta" eventually and Vanessa is kindly making it for me. When it arrives I shall take some pics and show it off.

I wish the lovely Vanessa good luck in her venture. I shall be back for more yummy bags.

Oilcloth Doorstops

Well, i did make some doorstops in this lovely fabric, and here they are, this is Hibiscus and you can just mop right around it. It has a jute handle which i find works well with the doorstops.

Luckily i took some pics in time, they have now been accosted by my daughter and her flat mate, they just walk right in and say, "oh these look good, i need one or two maybe, can i take these to save me waiting for you to make me some" . What can you say. Its nice to know that you are appreciated sometimes.

Well, i shall have some in my store for a while.

I will now get on and photo all the other lovely things i have made this week. I have had a sewing sort of week.

Red Lace Mexican Oilcloth Doorstop, in a pyramid shape.

I have been asked if I do ship to the US. Yes i do and everywhere else quite regularly, the doostops ship for a flat rate of AUD$8.50 anywhere. Australia free shipping.

Kitch Mexican Oilcloth - how tasty is this retro design

This is so retro, Mexican Oilcloth ~ a lighter weight oilcloth than the usual, (which is usually cotton or cotton duck which has been laminated with pvc , so thicker) The ink is printed onto the first coat of Pvc, not onto the backing, this is then coated with a clear layer of Pvc, making it stain resitant and waterproof. The composition is 91% PVC AND 9% cotton and polyester.

The fabulous blue background and orange/pink hibiscus is just so yummy. I also have in my store the red lace Mexican Oilcloth too.

As I am on my never ending mission for oilcloth, im going to make a doorstopper in this, for an outside door I have that bangs around a lot, if it turns out well then I shall take a photo and post it here.

Oilcloth Easy to Sew

Oilcloth is very easy cloth to sew, less hems are required and if you are like me and want it finished in a hurry, this is the ideal fabric to use. Above are some pictures of some quick items to sew. A doorstop, 1 fat quarter if plenty for this oilcloth doorstop. The childrens apron uses a fat quater too, with some lovely grossgrain ribbons for ties, great just to wipe clean after a cake making session.
The gift tags well, they are from offcuts of oilcloth, too lovely to throw away, so i made these up with a card backing and sticking the oilcloth with some pva glue and a grossgrain tie to finish off.

Oilcloth pvc ~ What it is ~ Tips on Sewing Oilcloth

Oilcloth pvc ~ what is it?
Oilcoth is a specially treated fabric which has been waterproofed. Originally, oilcloth was made from oil impregnated canvas, leading to the name OILCLOTH, now it is in fact used in the modern sense to refer to cotton backed with a vinyl material which is waterproof and can easily be wiped clean.

The origin for Oilcloth can be found in sail making, as the original oilcloth was made from canvas and used by fishermen and sailors. the canvas material could be coated in oils, waxes and clays to make it waterproof and then used to wrap valuable materials for long sea journeys making them weather resistant. The colours would have been very limited back in those days as it was designed for function and not beauty.

Today, however Oilcloth comes in a variety of thickness and wonderful colours, with many more uses, Oilcoth can be used today in many ways including coverings for tables, chairs and pantry shelves, as well as outdoor cushions, covers for outdoor furniture, bags, totes, doorstops, and aprons, bunting decorations and much more.

Tips on How to sew Oilcloth Fabric ~
Oilcloth is relatively easy to sew, a teflon foot can be used in your sewing maching, making the friction less and the fabric will glide easily.

I personally use Silcon spray, i lightly spray the foot plate of the sewing machine and the pvc side of the oilcloth, eliminating any friction, thats all there is to it. It slides beautifully.
Have a practise first, you'll be amazed how easy it is.

If you dont need a hem for example on a tablecloth, I cut along the length with my pinking scissors (zig zag scissors) just for a nice finish.

I have a selection of oilcloth pvc in my store from designers Red Plum Linen and Cath Kidston available by the metre and 1/4 metre.

Fabric sale Fabric Sale

I have that spring feeling, for spring cleaning and clearing out cupboards and shelves, sorting out fabrics and having a bit of a sale. A bit like moley from "The Wind in The Willows" white washing the walls and then breaking free to enjoy the sunshine.

After realising that this feeling comes from when i lived in the northern hemisphere, and everyone looked forward to spring and daffodils and sunshine after Christmas, but not here in Australia, Autumn and winter are next before spring, but it must be an inbuilt thing in my body clock. So i will forget about Autumn and think Spring instead!!

Anyway, ive added some more to my fabric sale in my store this week, as im having an "Autumn clean" so take a peek. Most designs are just remnants, there is some meterage, so check the availability. Happy shopping.

Oh and please let me know if you have that Spring Feeling too, id love to hear from - or is it just me!!

Have a great day,

Susie

Fabric clear out....

Thought id have a quick fabric clear out this week, and once i started looking i discovered all sorts of lovely fabrics, that i had forgotten about. When i turned round i had this mountain of fabric behind me, like a little ones in search of something at the bottom of the toybox. So then had to neatly tidy them all away to make room for all the new fabrics i will be buying this year, oh i cant wait, thats the fun part, having them arrive at the door - its so exciting.
Some i have put a Fabric Sale on in my store- mainly quilting fabrics, to make some room, Isadora Phoexnix dots, Tanya Whelan Ava Rose and Dena Designs.

**** Happy New Year ****

Wow - so where did that last month dissapear to, Christmas and New year just seem like a blur, my children cant beleive its all over, but are already looking forward to this years Christmas, oh to be that age again.
I have had a few hours spare over the last couple of days to finally upload some new fabrics in to my store, I have a new fabric designer on board, Hollabee textiles, with 3 colourways in the beautiful Bloem design ~ which are designed and hand printed by Bianca van Meeuwen in house at Ink & Spindle.
The fabrics are hand screen printed using environmentally friendly solvent free inks on a a cotton/linen blend.

The Swirls designs are printed on an organic cotton/hemp blend, and the colours are gorgeous

Each of these designs are available from as little as 1/4 metre, which is enough for the front of a cushion or to cover a foot stool.
