Tips for Sewing Oilcloth / Laminated Cotton

Here are some easy to follow Tips on How to sew Oilcloth Fabric  and Laminated Cotton Fabric ~

Oilcloth/Laminated cotton  is relatively easy to sew, a teflon foot can be used in your sewing maching, making the friction less so as the fabric will glide easily.

I personally use a Silcon spray,  lightly spraying  the footer plate of the sewing machine and the shiney side of the oilcloth.  This will then allow the oilcloth to glide effortlessly between the two eliminating any friction.  You must hold the fabric steady, so as not to get too many wavy lines, but once you have practised a couple of times, its really easy.  Oilcloth can also be overlocked, using the same method.

Thats all there is to it. It slides beautifully.
Have a practise first, you'll be amazed how easy it is.

Tablecloths dont need hemming as Oilcloth / Laminated cottons do not fray, but a nice finish is either to cut along the edges with pinking scissors (zig zags) or make a scollaped edge using half of a cup or plate.  This is very effective and will set off your tablecloth or apron bottom beautifully.  The edges can also be bound with bias binding in a contrasting colour, this is very simple and effective too.

Have fun experimenting with sewing oilcloth, you will be amazed at how easy it is, and wondered why you didnt try it out before.

We have just listed some gorgeous new oilcloth bundles, in simply stunning summer colours, with limes and pinks, poppies, blues and stripes.

Happy sewing!!

Bettie Birdie ~ Retro bunting/hanging birds

Its so nice to have my camera back at long last, and take some pics of my renovations and also my new Bettie Birdies.
I wanted to make some bunting,  but didnt want the regular triangles, which i love  and have in my laundry.  I wanted something slightly different.

I had a rummage around in my workroom, because I new hiding somewhere was the bird pattern I had made last year, for some patches on teeshirts.  After some frantic emptying of boxes, I found her.  I had named her Bettie Birdie.  I file in mysterious ways!!!!!

Anyway to cut a long story short, I broke out my oilcloth and made these gorgeous doublesided Birdies.  And they do the trick, just what I wanted.  I have since been asked if I sell these, so here they are, in my Made It Shop.
Pop over if you get a minute, Iam running an offer with these ~ if you buy 4 you can have the 5th totally FREE.

Vintage Pink

Happy decorating.

Intermission

Phew that was another busy week.

Does anyone remember this test card from the olden days of TV, we had it in the UK when there wasnt anything to watch, I think it dates back to the late 1960s, ooh how time flies.

Anyway, my on line store is having an over haul so to speak and we plan to be off line for a short while, we'll have an intermission. hense the test card.

I shall keep blogging and hopefully all will come good When September Comes - so until then, I shall keep you posted.

I think i always wanted to be that little girl!!

Return to sewing, the holiday is over...

Town of 1770

Well, didn't we have a lovely time camping here on this absolute beachfront campsite - Town of 1770. The sky was blue and sea was bluer and i was just a little bluer than that - freezing is not an understatement.

This picturesque town is so beautiful and if i could live there i would.

With log fires and toasted marshmallows at night, this was a truely lovely time. I did miss my sewing machine. It takes a few days to unwind and get used to the camping lark, walking out to the bathroom and dishwashing in the open air, but once settled in and into the swing of camping life its all good fun.

The boys played on the beach and we just sat and watched till sunset. Ahhhhh... with a beer or two.

I had made myself a nice new oilcloth tablecloth in the hibiscus with pink background, just to brighten up the camp table to add some colour to the khaki of the tent. It was so admired by lots of campers, i could have set up a stall and sold them!!

New In Store ~ Anna Maria Horner Oilcloth Fortune

It seems like months ago since i decided to stock this fabulous laminated print of Anna Maria Horners'. These subtle colours are just so beautiful, i couldnt resist adding to my store.
The 100% cotton fabric has been laminated to give it a waterproof vinyl surface. Oilcloth pvc with a cotton backing. So supple and soft, so easy to sew. I shall have a tablecloth in this one, its such a happy print.

Also a great advantage, is it is 140cm wide, making 1/4 metre 70cm x 50cm, which is ample to make a beachbag, or a beautiful apron from, without breaking the bank balance.

Also, i couldnt resist this lovely retro ticking stripe of Cath Kidstons, I only have a few metres left now, as it is so popular, this is a much heaving oilcloth pvc, with the backing beeing 100% cotton duck, making it great for totes and aprons, and bunting.
